Elissa Dowlen, MD

I grew up in Norwich, Vermont, a small town nestled between the hills of Vermont and Dartmouth College. I loved my childhood in New England and have many happy memories of ice skating on our neighborhood pond, sledding in feet of fresh snow, and swimming in a quiet lake in Maine every summer. It was also during these years that my dream to work with children began. My father, as well as many close family friends in our small town who were nurses, physicians, and residents in training, gave me an early glimpse into the medical world. These role models displayed so beautifully the hard work and compassion that fueled their careers of serving and caring for the well-being of others. When my family became a foster family for infants and young children, I discovered how much I especially loved helping my mom care for the babies, and developed my goal to pursue a career in pediatrics.

After graduating from high school, I moved to the suburbs of Chicago to attend Wheaton College where I majored in Biology. After college, I spent a year back in New England, working in the front office of a medical office and co-coaching a middle school cross country running team through a community partnership with the Children's Hospital at Dartmouth. My journey then brought me to a very special place--Winston-Salem, North Carolina!-- to attend medical school at the Wake Forest School of Medicine. As a child, I had spent every spring break visiting my grandparents in North Carolina which made this great state a natural second home. I met my husband during medical school. We both completed our residencies at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, during which time we welcomed our first child. We have found Winston-Salem to be a wonderful home for us and can often be found outside on a run or spending time with our son who is now a toddler.

As a medical student, I had the amazing opportunity to spend a month at Twin City Pediatrics during an elective that I created with the help of Dr. Caroline Brown. This experience confirmed my love for outpatient pediatrics. I now feel so blessed to have the opportunity to work for TCP and to work alongside such an incredible group of people who seek to provide the best possible care to their patients each and every day.
